Before pumpkin Jack-O-Lanterns entered the scene, turnips used to be carved to ward away evil spirits during the Celtic celebration of Samhain.  These relatives of the mustard family are a hearty, nutrient dense vegetable that are low in carbohydrates, so can be used as a low carb alternative to potatoes.
Seasonality: Humboldt's mild climate allows for turnips to grow year round.  However, since they are one of the few veggies able to grow year round, they are most prolific at the farmers' market during the winter months.

Preservation

The Basics: Turnips have a thick skin, which some people find unpleasant to eat.  Before eating, you should wash and peel them.  Raw turnips have a slightly spicy flavor, so many people prefer to cook or pickle them instead of eating them raw.
