Humboldt County has a rich history surrounding apples. Albert Etter (1872-1950) was a plant breeder best known for his work creating heirloom varieties of apples. He staked a claim to a piece of land along the Mattole River Valley, now known as Ettersburg, in 1894 where most of his orchard work occurred. Beginning with a collection of around 600 apple varieties, which he gathered across America and Europe, it is reported that Mr Etter is responsible for hybridizing around 10,000 varieties.
