Humboldt County has a rich history surrounding apples.  Albert Etter (1872-1950) was a plant breeder best known for his work creating heirloom varieties of apples.  He staked a claim to a piece of land along the Mattole River Valley, now known as Ettersburg, in 1894 where most of his orchard work occurred.  Beginning with a collection of around 600 apple varieties, which he gathered across America and Europe, it is reported that Mr Etter is responsible for hybridizing around 10,000 varieties.

Many of NCGA's apple farms contain apple trees that were bred by Etter.  Talk to your local apple farmer to find out what unique varieties they have on their properties that you can only get here in Humboldt!

Seasonality
The first apples of the year are usually Gravenstein, which begin showing up on market tables in July.  Akane are another early variety.  Pink Ladies are some of the last available apples, sometimes seen as late as December.
