Landseeker: Farm manager seeking 1-10 acres

Landseeker Description:

Experienced Farm Manager looking to lease farmland with housing within 30 minutes of Arcata. I have over 10 years experience as a farm manager and caretaker and a degree in sustainable a agriculture and food systems. I am looking for a place to live where I can provide land stewardship in exchange for housing and an affordable rental situation.

What features of the property are essential?

Housing and at least 1acre of land that can be cultivated or converted for cultivation. I have experience converting fallow field into fields for vegetable cultivation.

Describe your farming experience.

I have a bachelors degree in sustainable agriculture and food systems and over 10 years experience managing nurseries and small organic diversified farms growing vegetables and livestock in New England and Humboldt County. I have references from organic farmers in Vermont and Humboldt County available. I used to own a diversified vegetable and flower farming Humboldt and now I have a side job doing organic farm inspections and my main job is in agricultural conservation. I also have experience with conservation work helping farmers create conservation plans and seeking funding from the NRCS. I have experience caring for farm animals including sheep, goats, cows, chickens, pigs, and turkeys. I can maintain fencelines, operate a tractor for mowing, post digging, field use conversion, cultivation. I also have experience working with the public in agriculture including leading volunteer events in community gardens and organizing kids summer programs in community gardens and farms.

Are you currently farming?

No

What are your short term goals for the land?

My goal is to have somewhere to live that is affordable and provides me with space to grow my own food (at least 1/2 acre cultivation space).

What are your long term goals?

My long term goals for this property are to maintain or increase property value of the land through good land stewardship that cares for the natural resources on the farm (soil, water, air, wildlife)

Describe your housing needs:

1-2 bedroom space for $1000 or less (negotiable). Housing must not have mold issues.
